The English curriculum aims to ensure that students:
- equip with the skills to confidently listen, read, view, speak, write, and create across a wide range of increasingly complex texts and contexts. It fosters accuracy, fluency, and purposeful communication in both spoken and written forms.
- will develop an appreciation for the richness and versatility of the English language, learning how it can be used to express ideas, convey information, engage audiences, and present persuasive arguments. The programme also builds a strong understanding of Standard Australian English and how language works alongside visual and other non-verbal elements to create meaning.
- through the exploration of diverse texts, students will cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper appreciation of literature, enhancing their ability to analyse, interpret, and respond with insight.
Reading and Viewing
Reading and Viewing focuses on developing students’ ability to understand, interpret, analyse, and reflect on a wide range of written, visual, print, and digital texts. Students engage with diverse materials, including literary works, to build critical thinking and deepen their understanding of how meaning is created. Through active reading and viewing, students explore the relationship between texts and their contexts, while also developing effective strategies to enhance comprehension, analysis, and enjoyment of different forms of media.
Writing
Writing engages students in the full process of creating texts, including planning, drafting, editing, and publishing. Students learn to use language effectively across a variety of contexts, adapting their writing for different purposes, audiences, and levels of formality. The curriculum develops students’ ability to express ideas clearly, thoughtfully, and creatively, while building a strong understanding of the conventions of Standard Australian English. Students also develop a metalanguage to confidently analyse, discuss, and refine their use of language.
Speaking and Listening
Speaking and Listening focuses on the effective use of oral language to communicate and interpret meaning in both formal and informal contexts. Students develop the skills to adapt their speech for different audiences and purposes, using appropriate tone, voice, and body language. The curriculum also emphasises active listening, enabling students to engage thoughtfully with others, respond appropriately, and understand the conventions of various spoken forms, such as discussions, presentations, and debates.
